Hormel recalls Jennie-O Turkey burgers

Hormel’s Jennie-O Turkey is recalling about 55-thousand pounds of frozen raw turkey burgers purchased at Sam’s Club stores that are suspected of salmonella contamination.  The USDA recall was issued last Friday after a dozen people in 10 states were diagnosed with illnesses caused by salmonella.

The agency’s Food Safety & Inspection Service determined a number of those people became ill after eating Jennie-O Turkey burgers.  The recalled turkey burgers have a “use by” date of December 31st, 2011.  Sam’s Club is fully refunding the purchase price upon return of the product.

The illnesses were confirmed in Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin – also in –  Arizona, California, Colorado, Washington, Georgia and Mississippi.

The FSIS is reminding consumers that raw turkey products, including turkey burgers, need to be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to be safe.
