California has not increased milk testing

Despite some reports to the contrary, California has not stepped-up testing of milk from grass-fed cows for radiation. Governor Jerry Brown and the interim director of the California Department of Public Health, Dr. Howard Backer, issued a joint statement assuring residents that while they are monitoring the situation, “there is no threat to the people of California due to radiation in Japan.”

Milk in California is routinely checked for radiation on a monthly basis but CDPH says there is no additional testing being conducted. The California Department of Public Health does maintain eight radiologic air monitoring stations across the state and they have increased surveillance from once a week to every 48 hours. EPA also has a network of monitors in the state.
