Ag Awareness Month begins

The month of March has been proclaimed Agriculture Awareness Month in Indiana by Governor Mitch Daniels and on Monday, March 7, Indiana’s Family of Farmers held a kickoff reception at the Indiana State House. Lt. Governor Becky Skillman tells Brownfield the State House event is significant in many ways.

“What it means is putting a real face on Indiana agriculture,” said Skillman. “Letting legislators, letting those visiting the Statehouse mingle with their neighbor, with their friend in many cases, someone who is involved in agriculture on a daily basis and not only does this for their families livelihood, but they do this year-around, in good times and bad for all of us.”

District 15 State Representative Don Lehe of Brookston was on hand and believes having agriculture showcased does make a difference.

“We’ve got all these commodity groups involved, they are here at the Statehouse, they are concerned about issues with agriculture and they are showing Indiana how they operate, what’s important to them, I think it’s just a great image for agriculture,” said the Republican State Representative.

The Indiana Beef Cattle Association (IBCA) was just one of many organizations represented at the Kickoff Reception, Donnie Lawson of Boone County was at the booth talking with legislators.

“It’s good for us to get out and meet the Legislators here on their turf, you know they’re pretty busy, well they’re supposed to be pretty busy anyway, unfortunately some of them aren’t, but it’s good to be here because they don’t have much time, we can share some comments with them and talk to them and then they can go back to their office and continue doing the State’s work,” Lawson said.
