Bt corn residue study

A study, conducted by researchers from the University of Notre Dame, The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Indiana University, Southern Illinois University and Loyola University, indicating that traces of Bt corn residue can be found in waterways throughout the Midwest has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

Christian Krupke, associate professor of field crops at Purdue University, who did not participate in the study, tells Brownfield there is no reason to be alarmed.

“It’s nothing to get alarmed about or to change the way we grow crops or anything based on this would be really premature,” said Krupke, “Because this is just a first step in seeing how and where these residues move.”

Krupke says the authors of the report are very careful to point out that their study does not answer the big question, “is there any effect upon aquatic organisms?” That’s something the Purdue associate professor believes will take place in a separate study or series of studies, without it, this is just a study of mobility of crop residue.
