2010 wheat crop below trade projections

USDA’s 2010 wheat production numbers came out below trade expectations.

The Ag Department has the total crop at 2.224 billion bushels, which was at the low end of trade estimates but still up from 2009’s 2.216 billion bushels.

Average yield was pegged at 46.7 bushels per acre, compared to 44.5 a year ago.

Planted area was reported at 53.603 million acres, compared to 59.168 million last year, with harvested area at 47.567 million acres, compared to 49.893 million in 2009.

Winter wheat came out at 1.485 billion bushels, compared to the average estimate of 1.524 billion bushels and 2009’s total of 1.523 billion. Hard red winter made up the bulk of the total at 1.018 billion bushels with soft red winter at 237.804 million bushels and white winter at 229.095 million bushels.

Average yield for winter wheat was 46.8 bushels per acre, compared to 44.2 a year ago.

The planted area totaled 37.335 million acres, compared to 43.346 million last year, with harvested area at 31.749 million acres, compared to 34.510 million in 2009.

Spring wheat was reported at 626.937 million bushels, compared to the pre-report projection of 636 million bushels and the 2009 total of 584 million.

The average yield was pegged at 46.9 bushels per acre, compared to 45.1 a year ago.

Planted area came out at 13.698 million acres, compared to 13.268 million last year, with harvested area at 13.379 million acres, compared to 12.955 million in 2009.


Wheat production for Brownfield/Waitt coverage area:

Illinois: Winter Wheat: 16.520 million bushels, compared to 45.920 million in 2009; average yield of 56.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from a year ago; planted area of 330,000 acres, compared to 850,000 last year and harvested area of 295,000 acres, compared to 820,000 in 2009.

Indiana: Winter Wheat: 13.800 million bushels, compared to 30.150 million in 2009; average yield of 60.0 bushels per acre, compared to 67.0 a year ago; planted area of 250,000 acres, compared to 470,000 last year and harvested area of 230,000 acres, compared to 450,000 in 2009.

Iowa: Winter Wheat: 460,000 bushels, compared to 990,000 in 2009; average yield of 46.0 bushels per acre, compared to 45.0 a year ago; planted area of 15,000 acres, compared to 28,000 last year and harvested area of 10,000 acres, compared to 22,000 in 2009.

Missouri: Winter Wheat: 12.600 million bushels, compared to 34.310 million in 2009; average yield of 45.0 bushels per acre, compared to 47.0 a year ago; planted area of 370,000 acres, compared to 780,000 last year and harvested area of 280,000 acres, compared to 730,000 in 2009.

Nebraska: Winter Wheat: 64.070 million bushels, compared to 76.800 million in 2009; average yield of 43.0 bushels per acre, compared to 48.0 a year ago; planted area of 1.600 million acres, compared to 1.700 million last year and harvested area of 1.490 million acres, compared to 1.600 million in 2009.

South Carolina: Winter Wheat: 4.680 million bushels, compared to 7.050 million in 2009; average yield of 36.0 bushels per acre, compared to 47.0 a year ago; planted area of 145,000 acres, compared to 165,000 last year and harvested area of 130,000 acres, compared to 150,000 in 2009.

South Dakota: All Wheat: 123.475 million bushels, compared to 129.147 million in 2009; average yield of 45.3 bushels per acre, compared to 42.9 a year ago; planted area of 2.815 million bushels, compared to 3.209 million last year and harvested area of 2.725 million acres, compared to 3.009 million in 2009; Winter Wheat: 63.700 million bushels, compared to 64.260 million in 2009; average yield of 49.0 bushels per acre, compared to 42.0 a year ago; planted area of 1.350 million acres, compared to 1.700 million last year and harvested area of 1.300 million acres, compared to 1.530 million in 2009; Spring Wheat: 59.220 million bushels, compared to 64.680 million in 2009; average yield of 42.0 bushels per acre, compared to 44.0 a year ago; planted area of 1.450 million acres, compared to 1.500 million last year and harvested area of 1.410 million acres, compared to 1.470 million in 2009; Durum Wheat: 555,000 bushels, compared to 207,000 in 2009; average yield of 37.0 bushels per acre, compared to 23.0 a year ago; planted and harvested area of 15,000 acres, compared to 9,000 last year.

Wisconsin: Winter Wheat: 14.720 million bushels, compared to 21.420 million in 2009; average yield of 64.0 bushels per acre, compared to 68.0 a year ago; planted area of 240,000 acres, compared to 335,000 last year and harvested area of 230,000 acres, compared to 315,000 in 2009.
