At the Iowa Farm Bureau’s summer policy conference in Des Moines, county delegates are debating whether traditional farm program payments should be eliminated in favor of stronger safety net programs.
On Thursday, a resolution to end all farm program payments and invest the savings in a purely privatized crop-insurance program failed by just one vote. However, the delegates did approve a resolution to eliminate the five-billion dollar direct payment program and use that money to improve crop insurance.
Delegates will continue to debate Iowa Farm Bureau’s position on the 2012 farm bill today. Resolutions that are passed will be presented to the full membership at the Iowa Farm Bureau’s annual meeting in December.
