Chinese dairy cleared on hormone suspicion

China’s Health Ministry has cleared the Synutra International dairy company of any link between its infant formula and high hormone levels found in some baby girls.

Parents had complained that three babies developed breasts after drinking the formula made by Synutra. Synutra pointed to New Zealand’s Fonterra as the source of their powder but Fonterra responded that use of growth hormones is not allowed in New Zealand and none of their product is to blame. Synutra said they tested all of their products and found no contamination either. The company was backed up by the deputy head of the endocrine department at a local children’s hospital who said the infants treated for the condition at the hospital had never consumed formula made by Synutra.
