USDA Mandatory is reporting a light to moderate cattle trade in Kansas on Wednesday on moderate to good demand. Compared to last week, live sales are trending 1.50 to 2.00 higher than the bulk of last week’s sales at 92.00 to 93.00. Some sellers are passing the 93.00 bid. Trading is inactive in all other areas. Asking prices are around 93.00 to 94.000 in the South and 150.00 plus in the North. Choice boxed beef is .14 lower at 154.32, and select is down .34 at 145.33.
Feeder cattle receipts at the Ozarks Regional Stockyards at West Plains, MO totaled 5786 head on Tuesday. Compared to last week, steers traded steady to 2.00 higher, heifers under 550 pounds were steady to 2.00 lower, over 550 pounds steady to 4.00 higher. Medium and large 1 and 1-2 steers weighing 500 to 600 pounds brought 112.50 to 130.50, 7 to 8 weights traded from 108.00 to 116.00. Feeder heifers weighing 500 to 600 pounds brought 107.50 to 114.50, and 7 to 8 weights traded at 102.00 to 108.50 per hundredweight.
Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade opened 2.88 lower at 71.82 on a carcass basis, the West is down 3.18 at 71.85, and Eastern barrows and gilts are .66 lower at 73.74. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 69.00 to 70.00. Cash hog prospects at midweek appear to be torn between sharply lower carcass value and slow country receipts. If buyers sense they are seeing enough willing sellers, they are likely to further soften bids as they go along.
