Nixon signs “urban farming” bill

Governor Jay Nixon has signed a bill today creating a Joint Committee on Urban Farming. Farm policy, urban development and state agency leaders will advise the legislative task force which will study the impact of urban farm cooperatives and sustainable living communities on a statewide basis and come up with recommendations for the 2011 legislature.

At today’s bill signing in Kansas City, Nixon said he and First Lady Georganne Nixon have a vegetable and herb garden planted at the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City.

  • I would like to see something in there to protect the urban livestock – who were in the country – before the develpoements crept in and made them urban!

  • Gardening isn’t farming. I hope Gov. Nixon and our legislators understand that.

This initiative would be a worthy endeavor during good economic times. But at a time when the State is facing a deficit and is laying off employees, it is about the lowest priority I can think of. Our legislators shouldn’t even have sent this bill to the Governor. The Govenor should have put this expenditure on the shelf and vetoed it.

That is especially true considering the Governor recomended cutting funding for University Extension Eductation programs and high school Vocational Agriculture Education Programs.
