USDA projects record soybean acreage

USDA’s updated 2010 acreage estimates show corn and soybean acreage both up 2% from 2009 with a new record high for soybeans.

Total planted area for soybeans is pegged at 78.9 million acres, compared to 77.45 million a year ago, with harvested area projected at 77.99 million acres, potentially the largest ever and up from 2009’s total of 76.372 million. Nationally, USDA expects 3% of soybeans to be planted after another crop is harvested, compared to 6% in 2009.

Corn planted acreage is seen at 87.87 million acres, compared to 86.48 million last year, with harvested area at 81.005 million acres, compared to 79.6 million a year ago.

Total wheat acreage is placed at 54.3 million acres, down 8% from 2009’s total of 59.1 million and the smallest U.S. total since 1971. Harvested acreage is seen at 48.3 million acres, compared to 49.87 million for 2009.

Winter wheat area is estimated at 37.7 million acres, compared to 43.3 million last year, with harvested area at 32.1 million acres, compared to 34.5 million a year ago.

Spring wheat planted area is pegged at 13.9 million acres, compared to 13.27 million last year, with harvested area at 13.59 million acres, up from 2009’s total of 12.96 million.

Illinois: Corn: Planted: 12.6 million acres, compared to 12 million in 2009; Harvested: 12.4 million acres, compared to 11.8 million in 2009; Soybeans: Planted: 9.3 million acres, compared to 9.4 million in 2009; Harvested: 9.25 million acres, compared to 9.35 million in 2009 (Projected 2% following another harvested crop); All Wheat: Planted: 350,000 acres, compared to 850,000 in 2009; Harvested: 325,000 acres, compared to 820,000 in 2009.

Indiana: Corn: Planted: 6 million acres, compared to 5.6 million in 2009; Harvested: 5.87 million acres, compared to 5.46 million in 2009; Soybeans: Planted: 5.3 million acres, compared to 5.45 million in 2009; Harvested: 5.29 million acres, compared to 5.44 million in 2009 (Projected 2% following another harvested crop); All Wheat: Planted: 300,000 acres, compared to 470,000 in 2009; Harvested: 280,000 acres, compared to 450,000 in 2009.

Iowa: Corn: Planted: 13.3 million acres, compared to 13.7 million in 2009; Harvested: 13 million acres, compared to 13.4 million in 2009; Soybeans: Planted: 10.2 million acres, compared to 9.6 million in 2009; Harvested: 10.15 million acres, compared to 9.53 million in 2009.

Missouri: Corn: Planted: 3.3 million acres, compared to 3 million in 2009; Harvested: 3.2 million acres, compared to 2.92 million in 2009; Soybeans: Planted: 5.5 million acres, compared to 5.35 million in 2009; Harvested: 5.45 million acres, compared to 5.3 million in 2009 (Projected 4% following another harvested crop); All Wheat: Planted: 390,000 acres, compared to 780,000 in 2009; Harvested: 310,000 acres, compared to 730,000 in 2009.
