RFA calls for immediate E12 allowance

In light of the problems being caused by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association is calling on the Obama administration to re-evaluate its energy and environmental strategy.

Bob Dinneen suggests one aggressive and immediate short term response would be to allow up to 12 percent ethanol in gasoline.

“Recognizing that EPA’s existing oxygenate-stacking rules would seem to allow for 12 percent ethanol to be used today—without more testing, without more delay—just recognize that that’s what you’ve already allowed in previous regulations and let’s move forward with that today,” Dinnen says.

The next step, he says, would be a waiver allowing for 15 percent ethanol blends—in all vehicles.

“Move expeditiously on the E15 waiver request,” says Dinneen, “and not do a partial waiver, but allow E15 to be used by consumers that choose to do so—in all vehicles.”

As part of its longer-term strategy, Dinneen says the administration should also make more funding available for next generation renewable fuels.
