Heavy rain may mean some corn replanting

Missouri growers planted over a million acres of crops for the second week in a row but heavy rain last weekend put their field work on hold. Corn planting is around three weeks ahead of last year and the five year average at 69 percent complete as of Sunday. The Missouri Ag Statistics Office says the southeast district is 95 percent planted. Heavy rain may lead to some replanting of corn. Twenty percent of corn has emerged, 15 days ahead of last year, two days ahead of normal.

Soybean planting is in the beginning stages, five percent complete, ahead of last year by 15 days.

Ten percent of cotton is planted, slightly ahead of last year. Rice planting jumped over 40 points to 84 percent complete. Sorghum planting is seven percent complete, ahead of last year but in the normal range.

The winter wheat crop is in poorer shape than last year. It’s 27 percent poor to very poor, compared with only eight percent last year. The worst conditions are in the east-central and southwest districts. Four percent of the crop was headed, mostly in southeast Missouri.
