Neb. pork producers send ‘Empty Plate’ message

As part of its Ag Week activities, the Nebraska Pork Producers Association has given every state senator, as well as the governor, an empty plate.

According to the group’s vice-president, Shane Meyer of Exeter, the empty plate symbolizes the possible future of Nebraska’s ability to produce pork for people to eat—especially if animal activist groups have their way.

“It’s a symbol of how important ag is in this state, and in this country,” Meyer says, “and without ag, we might all have empty plates.”

Meyer says the animal activist groups, if successful, could force livestock production to move from Nebraska or even the United States.

“They’ll do anything they can to keep people from eating meat, as a source of protein,” he says, “so it’s just a reminder that, before things happen in the legislature, to look at the importance of the way they vote and how it affects everyone.”

The pork producers are also serving a pork lunch to low-income people at Lincoln’s Matt Talbot kitchen today, as part of their Ag Week activities.
