The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) and state pork producer organizations are once again urging the Obama administration to resolve a dispute with Mexico over allowing its trucks into the U.S.
A pilot program that allowed a limited number of Mexican trucking companies to work beyond the United States’ 25-mile commercial zone expired last year and Congress refused to renew it. Mexico retaliated by imposing higher tariffs on certain U.S. goods. Although pork wasn’t on the first retaliation list, NPPC officials are concerned that Mexico may be getting ready to update the list and could include pork.
Mexico is the number two market for U.S. pork exports.
