Weather outlook for spring

After one of the coldest winters the Midwest has seen in thirty years, it appears as if it will be an eventful spring. Tony Lupo, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Missouri says that the next few months will produce some severe weather.

“You get a jet stream that rides across the southern tier of state and that is a recipe for a little more severe weather,” said Lupo. “We mean thunderstorms, severe thunderstorms, and with that tornadoes could be accompanying them, hail, lightening, flash flooding, things like that. “

Severe weather can cause problems for producers but Lupo predicts very little interference when it comes to Mother Nature.

“Generally this will not affect producers too much because crops won’t be in the ground early in the season when you typically expect a lot of severe weather,” said Lupo. “As you get into May and June certainly the amount of water should be plentiful.”

This spring’s weather prediction resembles that of 2003 when 109 tornados swept through Missouri, the worst on record.
