Swiss will decide if animals should have lawyers

When Swiss voters go the polls on March 7th, one of the issues they will decide is whether animals should have lawyers.

Voters will decide whether every state in Switzerland should be required to appoint an animal lawyer to represent the interests of pets and farm animals in court.  Proponents argue that the abuses of pets and other animals are often not taken seriously by local authorities and don’t make it to court.  The Swiss Farming Association opposes the plan, but pet breeders are said to be divided on the issue.

One of the leaders of the movement, animal lawyer Antoine Goetschel, recently represented a dead fish in court.  Prosecutors had accused a fisherman of torturing the large pike because the angler battled the fish for about 10 minutes before reeling him in.

Goetschel and the dead fish lost their case.

  • Oh, My *gosh*!! Lawyers for animals??? Only a lawyer would think this was a good idea. Those greedy *bleep* lawyers are expensive. Who would be paying for this, the Swiss people?? …or do they expect an American bail-out? This has got to be the stupidest idea I have EVER heard of. And battling a pike for 10 minutes??? HA!! I once battled a Kansas catfish for over half an hour. He was delicious… so sue me you Swiss idiots.

  • I have tried to look at this from every angle and have decided they are nuts! If there were a case of legitimate animal abuse then that would be the job of the prosecutor to go after such person(s). I guess they will be mad at me for gathering the chicken’s eggs…

  • You people are cruel to animals!! Did you now that most people that are accused of animal cruelty hire a lawyer to defend themselves. So why shouldn’t someone speak for the animals? They should have lawyers to defend them.
