Approximately one hundred and fifty farmers representing 20 states are meeting in Coralville Iowa this week to set policy for the National Farmers Organization (NFO).
Several important resolutions were passed by the delegates on Tuesday. Gene Paul is the Policy Analyst of NFO and he told Brownfield high on the priority list was discussion concerning field hearings being conducted later this year by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Justice. Paul said producers are very concerned about the enforcement of antitrust laws, he says there have been so many mergers and consolidations that there really is not a competitive market out there that NFO’s marketing programs depend upon. Members were encouraged to attend the hearings and take part in them to make certain their voices are heard on how the lack of enforcement has impacted them and their operations.
Another issue that was discussed by delegates was the idea of a World Food Bank. With all the disasters around the world there is a growing need for food and NFO has long supported the idea of a food reserve that should be set aside in this country.
The annual meeting concludes on Thursday.
