USDA reports record corn, soybean crops for 2009

After a very trying season for producers in many areas of the U.S., USDA’s reporting 2009 corn and soybean production at new record levels.

USDA has last year’s corn crop at 13.151 billion bushels with a record average yield of 165.2 bushels per acre while soybeans were reported at 3.361 billion bushels with an all time high average yield of 44.0 bushels per acre.

Wayne Nelson, President of L&M Commodities at New Market, Indiana says considering there was talk of reducing the corn production number because of corn still in the field, the numbers were quite surprising.

“Quite a bit of difference when you look at adding 200  million instead of subtracting 50 or 100,” said Nelson. “That’s very negative corn this morning, it was offset a little bit by the increase in the feed useage, but all-in-all it looks like at least 15 to 20 cents lower out of the box this morning.”

2009 planted area for corn was reported at 86.482 million acres, with harvested area at 79.630 million, compared to 85.982 million and 78.570 million, respectively, in 2008. For soybeans, 2009 planted area was 77.541 million acres with harvested area of 76.407 million, compared to 2008 planted area of 75.718 million acres with harvested area of 74.681 million.

However, due to a large amount of un-harvested acreage, USDA says it will resurvey acreage, yield, production, and stocks figures for a number of states including Illinois, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

USDA says it “may” release updated numbers in the March 10th crop production update.
