Top Ten Food Trends for 2010

The Food Channel in conjunction with CultureWaves® and the International Food Futurists has come out with the Top Ten Food Trends for 2010. They say in the coming year, a back-to-basics economy will find consumers going back-to-basic foods.

Cooking from scratch is replacing convenience foods. In the grocery store, generics have morphed into private labels and the butcher is back in vogue. Food “vetting” is gaining popularity as consumers what to know where their food comes from and how it was raised. “Sustainable” is a key word. Food-with-benefits is also gaining popularity as consumers seek out extra added nutrition like extra calcium, Omega3 and beneficial bacteria in what they buy. .

The economy has enhanced the popularity of farmers markets and roadside stands and bartering-for-food is being utilized. Giving homemade foods as a gift is very chic. In restaurants, people are looking for diversity, unique, individual offerings and “fresh” is a key word.
