Winter stops the combines in Wisconsin

Not a lot of progress in Wisconsin’s corn fields last week. The National Ag Statistics Service Wisconsin Field Office says as of Sunday, 85 percent of the corn-for-grain crop was harvested, an 8-point gain over a week ago. The anywhere from 8 to 18 inches of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday halted any attempts at combining. Some did make a run at it later in the week but had problems with snow plugging the sieves. Reporters say farmers are just going to let the crop out there until the weather warms and the snow pack recedes. Harvest ranges from 96 percent complete in the Southwest District to just 55 percent combined in the North Central District.

With the arrival of winter, NASS says this will be the final crop report of the year.
