Wisconsin governor retains DNR appointment

As expected, Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle vetoed the legislation which would have taken appointment of the Department of Natural Resources Secretary from the governor and given it back to the DNR Board. The Governor says allowing his office to have a direct stake in the DNR has resulted in many major environmental measures being passed including the Great Lakes Compact, new mercury standards and expansion of the stewardship program. No word yet from supporters of the bill if they will try to override the Governor’s veto.

The DNR Secretary was appointed by the DNR board and then approved by the State Senate up until Governor Tommy Thompson made it and the Ag Secretary cabinet positions appointed by the governor.
