According to a report on feedstuffs.com, the crisis in the pork sector has claimed a large producer—possibly its largest victim to date.
Coharie Hog Farms of Clinton, North Carolina has filed for Chapter 11 protection, but says it will also liquidate all animals and assets. The feedstuffs report says Coharie has 30-thousand sows and was recently ranked as the 22nd largest pork producer in the U.S. Among its largest creditors, Coharie lists Bunge Corporation, which it said it owes more than 348-thousand dollars, and Newsham Choice Genetics, which is owed more than 307-thousand dollars. And the company said it owes some 30 farmers for corn for which it has taken delivery.
Coharie was founded in 1972 as a feed mill operation by Launch Faircloth, who later served as a U.S. Senator from North Carolina. The company remains held in family hands.
