Total cheese production in the U.S. in September was 845 million pounds, 4.4 percent more than a year ago but 0.5 percent less than in August. Italian type cheese production was 3.4 percent above September of last year at 351 million pounds; American type production was 341 million pounds up 6.4 percent from a year ago.
Wisconsin cheese production in September totaled 224.28 million pounds, a 5.9 percent increase over September of 2008. Italian type production in the Badger State increased 4.7 percent to 104.4 million pounds; American production was up 9.5 percent to 70 million pounds. And Cheddar output increased 11.5 percent to 53.9 million pounds.
Total cheese production in California in September was 167.55 million pounds, down 0.4 percent from a year ago. The Golden State produced 102.4 million pounds of Italian cheese, a 4.3 percent increase over September of last year, Cheddar output increased 8.5 percent to 28.5 million pounds while American-type production slipped 4.4 percent to just over 51 million pounds.
Rounding out the top-five cheese-making states: Idaho, 67.6 million pounds, a 3.1 percent increase over a year ago; New York, 63.4 million pounds, up 3.2 percent; Minnesota, 51.58 million pounds, a 3.9 percent increase with New Mexico right behind with 51.4 million pounds up 10.4 percent from last September. One other note, Vermont production dropped another 30.6 percent.
Butter production in the U.S. in September totaled 94.6 million pounds, a 21.9 percent drop from September of 2008. California butter production was 12.4 percent lower at 36.7 million pounds.

- Sherbet; 4.37 million gallons, down 5.9%
- Frozen yogurt; 5.81 million gallons, up 0.5%
