Iowa cat has H1N1

Officials in Iowa have confirmed a case of H1N1 virus in a cat. The cat, which has recovered, is believed to have caught the virus from a person in the household who was sick with H1N1. There is no evidence that the cat passed the virus to any other animals or people.

This is the first time the virus has been found in a cat and the American Veterinary Medical Association notes this was not an altogether unexpected event given the fact some viruses can pass from people to animals. AVMA advises pet owners to keep an eye on their pets and if there are any signs of illness, take them to a vet.

The AVMA is actively tracking all instances of H1N1 in animals and posting updates on their web site.
