Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade opened .87 lower at 57.82 on a carcass basis, the West is down .77 at 52.70, and the east is .25 lower at 49.83. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady to 1.00 higher at 46.00 to 49.00. Given the aggressive way hog buyers pursued live inventory on Monday, the assumption may be made they were either short bought and or planning to crank up production throughout the week. The pork carcass cutout value got back on track on Monday thanks to significant recovery in the ham and butt business.
Cattle country is quiet and significant business in not expected until mid-week. Asking prices are around 89 to 90 in the South, and 137 + in the North. Choice boxed beef at midday is up .36 at 141.99, and select is .91 higher at 136.74.
At the Faith Livestock Commission Company, Faith, SD feeder receipts totaled 6265 head on Monday. Compared to last week, steer calves sold mostly steady to 2.00 lower, the full decline was seen on cattle weighing over 600 pounds. Heifer calves sold unevenly steady. Yearling feeder steers and heifers were too lightly tested for an accurate market trend. Demand was moderate to good for all classes. Feeder steers medium and large 1: 408 head averaging 531 pounds brought 106.70, 563 heifers weighing 526 pounds brought 91.95 per hundredweight.
Slaughter lambs at Sioux Falls are mostly 1.00 higher on Tuesday. Shorn choice and prime weighing 122 pounds brought 93.25, wooled 93.00 to 94.75.
