Are prospects for climate change bill improving?

Barbara Boxer, chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works committee, predicts her committee will approve a climate change bill ahead of the United Nations climate summit in December. Energy Secretary Steven Chu goes even further, saying he’s optimistic that climate change legislation will become law before that Copenhagen conference begins.

Capitol Hill watchers say Boxer and her Senate colleague John Kerry face a tough fight to win over skeptical Republicans—and some Democrats—to get their climate change proposal passed.  But Reuters reports that their prospects improved Sunday when a Republican senator broke ranks with his party to outline a compromise with Democrats.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham co-wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times with Senator Kerry, saying they have found a framework for climate legislation to pass Congress.   Graham is one of a few dozen fence-sitters who Kerry and Boxer have been courting in order to amass the 60 votes needed for passage in the Senate.

Oh no – don’t let them screw up anything else. We already have enough problems going on and rather than fix those – they want to open up another can of worms and see what happens. Enough is enough – I guess I am ready to join the others and seceed as well.
