USDA raises 2009 corn and soybean production estimates

The USDA’s latest estimates of 2009 U.S. corn and soybean production were up modestly from the September projections.

The USDA sees corn at 13.018 billion bushels, compared to the average estimate of 12.993 billion bushels, September’s guess of 12.955 billion and the 2008 total of 12.101 billion bushels. The average yield is pegged at 164.2 bushels per acre, compared to the pre-report projection of 162.7, the September forecast of 161.9 and the 2008 average of 153.9 bushels per acre. If realized, this would be the highest average yield and second largest crop ever. Planted area for 2009 was 86.351 million acres and harvested area is expected to be 79.294 million acres.

Soybeans are estimated at a record 3.250 billion bushels. That compares to the average projection of 3.291 billion bushels, September’s estimate of 3.245 billion and the 2008 total of 2.967 billion bushels. The average yield is projected at 42.4 bushels per acre, which would be the third highest in history, compared to the pre-report estimate of 42.9 bushels per acre, September’s average of 42.3 and the 2008 average of 39.7 bushels per acre. 2009 planted area was 77.510 million acres and harvested area is seen at 76.619 million acres.
