Animal agriculture in the United States has seen better weeks than the one in which the month of October, 2009 was introduced. It all started when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) released a video depicting mistreatment of livestock at a dairy farm in Pennsylvania. PETA’s “undercover investigator” collected the footage. The release coincided with the first day of World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
The first day of October, World Vegetarian Day, kicked off Vegetarian Awareness Month and the Baltimore City Public Schools system announced, just in time for World Vegetarian Day, that it is implementing a “Meatless Monday” program.
Meatless Monday is a campaign that encourages people to cut meat from their diet one day a week.
