2009 U.S. wheat crop at 2.22 billion bushels

The USDA reports that 2009 U.S. wheat production totaled 2.220 billion bushels, compared to August’s estimate of 2.184 billion bushels and the 2008 total of 2.499 billion bushels. The average yield for all wheat was 44.4 bushels per acre, compared to the 2008 average of 44.9 bushels per acre. 2009 planted area was reported at 59.133 million acres, compared to 63.193 million a year ago. Harvested area was pegged at 50.058 million acres, compared to 2008’s 55.699 million acres.

Winter wheat production totaled 1.523 billion bushels, compared to 1.867 billion for 2008, with average yield of 44.2 bushels per acre, compared to the year ago average of 47.1 bushels per acre. 2009 planted area came out at 43.311 million acres, compared to 46.307 million for 2008, with harvested area at 34.485 million acres, compared to 2008’s total of 39.608 million.

By class, hard red winter came out at 919.015 million bushels, compared to 2008’s 1.035 billion, soft red winter was pegged at 403.563 million bushels, compared to 613.578 million a year ago and all white winter totaled 200.140 million bushels, compared to 219.062 million last year.

Non-durum spring wheat was reported at 587.361 million bushels, compared to 548.004 million a year ago. Average yield was placed at 45.0 bushels per acre, compared to 40.5 for 2008. The USDA pegged planted area at 13.268 million bushels, compared to 14.165 million acres a year ago, with harvested area at 13.055 million acres, compared to 13.517 million for 2008.

By class, hard red spring totaled 550.883 million bushels, compared to 2008’s 512.138 million and all white spring was pegged at 36.478 million bushels, compared to 35.865 million a year ago.

Durum production came out at 110.077 million bushels, compared to 2008’s 83.827 million, with an average yield of 43.7 bushels per acre, well above the 2008 average of 32.6 bushels per acre. 2009’s planted area was pegged at 2.554 million acres, compared to 2008’s 2.721 million, with harvested area at 2.518 million acres, compared to 2.574 million a year ago.

2009 oat production was pegged at 93.276 million bushels, compared to 89.135 million for 2008, with average yield at 67.6 bushels per acre, compared to 63.7 a year ago. 2009 planted area was reported at 3.404 million acres, compared to 3.247 million a year ago, with harvested area at 1.379 million acres, compared to 1.400 million for 2008.

Barley production totaled 227.383 million bushels, compared to 240.193 million in 2008, with average yield of 72.8 bushels per acre, compared to 63.6 a year ago. Planted area was reported at 3.567 million acres, compared to 2008’s 4.246 million and harvested area came out at 3.123 million acres, compared to 3.779 million last year.

Illinois: winter wheat: 45.920 million bushels, down 27.68 million from 2008; average yield of 56 bushels per acre, down 9 from a year ago; harvested area: 820,000 acres, down 330,000 from last year; oats: 1.625 million bushels, down 475,000 from 2008; average yield of 65 bushels per acre, down 5 from a year ago.

Indiana: winter wheat: 30.150 million bushels, down 8.49 million from 2008; average yield of 67 bushels per acre, down 2 from a year ago; harvested area: 450,000 acres, down 110,000 from last year; oats: 483,000 bushels, up 108,000 from 2008; average yield of 69 bushels per acre, down 6 from a year ago.

Iowa: winter wheat: 990,000 bushels, down 690,000 from 2008; average yield of 45 bushels per acre, down 3 from a year ago; harvested area: 22,000 acres, down 13,000 from last year; oats: 6.175 million bushels, up 1.3 million bushels from 2008; average yield of 65 bushels per acre, unchanged from a year ago.

Missouri: winter wheat: 34.310 million bushels, down 21.37 million from 2008; average yield of 47 bushels per acre, down 1 from a year ago; harvested area: 730,000 acres, down 430,000 from last year; oats: 495,000 bushels, up 165,000 from 2008; average yield of 55 bushels per acre, unchanged from a year ago.

Nebraska: winter wheat: 76.800 million bushels, up 3.32 million from 2008; average yield of 48 bushels per acre, up 4 from a year ago; harvested area: 1.600 million acres, down 70,000 from last year; oats: 2.070 million bushels, down 380,000 from 2008; average yield of 69 bushels per acre, down 1 from a year ago.

South Carolina: winter wheat: 7.050 million bushels, down 4.02 million from 2008; average yield of 47 bushels per acre, down 7 from a year ago; harvested area: 150,000 acres, down 55,000 from last year; oats: 825,000 bushels, down 391,000 from 2008; average yield of 55 bushels per acre, down 9 from a year ago.

South Dakota: winter wheat: 64.260 million bushels, down 39.69 million from 2008; average yield of 42 bushels per acre, down 13 from a year ago; harvested area: 3.009 million acres, down 411,000 from last year; spring wheat: 64.680 million bushels, up 280,000 from 2008; average yield of 44 bushels per acre, down 1 from a year ago; harvested area: 1.470 million acres, down 50,000 from last year; durum: 207,000 bushels, up 17,000 from 2008; average yield of 23 bushels per acre, up 4 from a year ago; harvested area: 9,000 acres, down 1,000 from last year; oats: 6.570 million bushels, down 2.19 million bushels from 2008; average yield of 73 bushels per acre, unchanged from a year ago; barley: 1.188 million bushels, down 575,000 from 2008; average yield of 54 bushels per acre, up 13 from a year ago.
