Ohio animal care campaign underway

Ohio Ballot InitiativeThe campaign to establish a livestock care standards board in Ohio is officially underway.

The campaign called “Ohioans for Livestock Care/Yes on Issue 2” got its start on Saturday at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.  It was the first of 12 rallies scheduled to be held throughout the state through mid-October.

Earlier this year, Ohio’s agricultural industry rejected compromise efforts by the Humane Society of the United States to establish tougher livestock laws. Ag interests are fighting back with the livestock care referendum, which would create a 13-member board comprised of Ohio livestock experts in animal care, food production farm management and food safety.  The board would establish standards governing care of the state’s livestock and poultry.

  • The Truth About Issue 2

Issue 2 would amend the Ohio state constitution to create a Livestock Board with unchecked power over livestock rules and regulations.
While masquerading as an attempt to improve food safety and animal welfare, Issue 2 would give a dozen political appointees broad and unchecked power to decide rules on how animals are raised, tracked or traced.

    How will this affect me?

It may seem that this will only affect people who raise livestock, but in reality this will affect everyone in Ohio, the communities we live in and the food that we feed our families.

    Buckeyes Against Issue 2:

We all have an interest in maintaining the integrity of our state constitution. Issue 2 allows corporate agribusiness to create a permanent place in our constitution, and gives them unchecked authority to make regulations that will benefit industrial agriculture. We cannot afford more government giveaways to special interests.

    Consumers Against Issue 2:

You care about the food that you feed your family. You want to know the truth about how food you buy has been raised, how it will affect your family’s health, and the health of your community. Issue 2 could shift our food production towards factory farming by imposing standards that make it challenging for farmers to be sustainable and could make it harder for you to find out the truth about how your food has been raised.

    Farmers Against Issue 2:

Farmers are vital in providing safe, healthy food for our communities. Issue 2 will add a new layer of unaccountable bureaucracy for farms and could impose new regulations such as mandatory animal identification, premises registration, and production requirements.

    Communities Against Issue 2:

Community health and well-being is dependent upon our surrounding environment. Ohio has a disconcerting number of factory farms and that number could increase if Issue 2 is passed. Issue 2 could make it easier for factory farms to enter our communities adding to more than 200 factory farms that already exist in the state.

  • saving our animals is a good work.. and working with bthe government for laws for the good of animals is a good start of helping our environment..You care about the food that you feed your family. You want to know the truth about how food you buy has been raised, how it will affect your family’s health, and the health of your community.
