MO Women in Ag Conference attendance up

Andrea JacksonThe 15th Annual Women in Ag conference in Northeast Missouri wrapped up Wednesday. A founding member of Missouri Women in Ag, Tammy Teeter, is a district conservationist with the NRCS office for Montgomery and Warren Counties. She tells Brownfield this was the biggest gathering yet, “One-hundred-sixty, I think they had registered. Usually it’s around 100 or 120. So, this is a good sized group and it’s good to see more lady landowners and agency-type people, too. So, it’s a good, diverse group.”

Many of the women work in NRCS and Soil and Water Conservation District offices throughout the state.

The conference is an educational, networking opportunity held in a different region of the state each year. This year, the three-day event was in Kirksville. Andrea Jackson, who farms in Adair County, was chosen as the 2009 Outstanding Woman of the Year.

The women attended workshops on stress management, estate planning issues, and animal health issues. They toured the Heartland Dairy and Creamery and the Pure Air Native Seed Company.  Professional ventriloquist Mechelle Matthews of Jefferson City – and several of her characters – entertained the ladies at Monday night’s banquet. On Wednesday, NRCS and other USDA agencies provided updates on the CSP and other 2008 Farm Bill programs.

The 16th Annual State Women in Ag Conference will be held next year in Branson.
