South Carolina’s hot dry weather helped crop progress last week, but rain is still needed. The state Ag Statistics office says the light, scattered rains of Tropical Storm Danny helped somewhat. Corn maturity improved last week in South Carolina and 50 percent of the crop has been harvested. Fifty-two percent is in good to excellent condition. Eighty-seven percent of soybeans had set pods as of Sunday with a few leaves beginning to change color. Cotton bolls have almost entirely set with 12 percent in the sate open. Fifty-one percent of the crop is in good to excellent condition.
Peanuts remain in fair or better condition.  Tobacco, peach and melon harvests are winding down.
