Cooler than normal temperatures and scattered rain in Indiana last week added to the growing concern that corn and soybeans won’t be fully mature come first frost. The Indiana field office of the Ag Statistics Service says northern parts of the state got the most rain last week, upwards of three inches. But there are still some central and eastern counties that need more moisture.Just seventy nine percent of corn is in the dough stage, behind last year and the five year average. Condition of corn – though – is better than last year at this time with 63 percent good to excellent.

Eighty-eight percent of soybean acreage is setting pods, behind last year and the average. Condition is better than last year at this time – 63 percent of beans are good to excellent.

Sixty-six percent of the third alfalfa cutting is complete – behind last year’s 82 percent.
