University of Illinois expects crop size to rise

Researchers from the University of Illinois have raised 2009 corn and soybean production estimates with their numbers now above the USDA’s most recent projections, assuming this month’s weather cooperates.

The estimate for corn is 12.937 billion bushels with an average yield of 161.7 bushels per acre and the new soybean projection is 3.37 billion bushels with an average yield of 43.9 bushels per acre. For the sake of comparison, the July estimates from similar research by the University of Illinois had corn at 12.344 billion bushels with an average yield of 154.1 bushels per acre.

On August 12, the USDA put corn at 12.761 billion bushels with an average yield at 159.5 bushels per acre and soybeans at 3.199 billion bushels with an average yield of 41.7 bushels per acre.

USDA’s next set of crop production estimates are out 7:30 AM Central Friday, September 11.
