Fifty years ago, during the icy depths of the Cold War, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev came to Iowa to learn about growing and feeding corn, and to visit his farmer friend Roswell Garst.

A statewide commemoration of the 50th anniversary of “Khrushchev in Iowa” will take place August 27th through the 30th.  A number of events are planned, including a banquet at the Hotel Fort Des Moines.  It will take place in the same room and feature the same menu as that served to Khrushchev in 1959.  Among the participants will be Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Khrushchev’s son Sergei Khrushchev, and more than 40 Russian and U.S. agribusiness leaders.

Iowa Farm Bureau and Iowa Corn Growers are among the sponsors.  For more information, go to http://www.creatinggreatplaces.org.

Interesting, and to think not to long ago I had mentioned about the Democrats looking into Nationalizing the farms in the United States. Setting up a collective like they had done in the Soviet Union. Hmm…
