USDA sees record soybean crop in 2009

The USDA projections for this year’s corn, soybeans and wheat crops have a record bean crop, the second largest corn crop ever and a larger than expected wheat crop.

Peter Georgantones of Investment Trading Services Inc. says the numbers weren’t all that surprising but it’s been an unusual year, “Some people could use a drink of water and obviously, some crop is behind some, but all in all,” Georgantones adds, “Nobody’s very upset this year and I’ve never had a year like that where I’ve just seen that so widespread.”

Georgantones believes that unless there’s an early frost, USDA’s corn yield estimate will continue to increase.

Corn’s expected to be the second largest crop ever at 12.761 billion bushels with the second highest average yield ever at 159.5 bushels per acre and harvested area of 80.007 million acres. Before the report, production estimates ranged from 11.792 billion to 12.814 billion bushels with average yield projected at 153.0 to 160.3 bushels per acre, and a year ago, production totaled 12.101 billion bushels with an average yield of 153.9 bushels per acre and harvested area of 78.640 million acres. USDA notes that thanks to generally good growing conditions, yield estimates increased for the central Great Plains Western Cornbelt, better-than-a-year-ago weather aided yields in the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys and the Atlantic Coast, but that the late start to planting and slower than average development pace for the Central Cornbelt lowered yield projections there.

Soybeans are pegged at a record 3.199 billion bushels with an average yield of 41.7 bushels per acre and harvested area of 76.767 million acres. Pre-report estimates for production ranged from 3 billion to 3.275 billion bushels and the yield projections ran from 40.9 to 43.5 bushels per acre. The 2008 crop totaled 2.959 billion bushels with an average yield of 39.6 bushels per acre and harvested area of 74.641 million acres. According to the Ag Department, with the exception of Illinois, yields are seen as steady to above a year ago for the Cornbelt and Great Plains with the biggest increase expected in Ohio.

Winter wheat came out at 1.537 billion bushels, with an average yield of 44.2 bushels per acre on harvested area of 34.787 million acres, out of a total U.S. wheat crop of 2.184 billion bushels. Prior to the report, analysts saw winter wheat at 1.5 billion to 1.55 billion bushels, while projecting the total crop at 2.150 billion bushels. Hard red winter made up most of the total at 914.561 million bushels, soft red winter was placed at 411.745 million and white winter came out at 211.042 million bushels. 2008’s winter crop totaled 1.868 billion bushels with average yield at 47.2 bushels per acre and harvested area of 39.614 million acres, out of a total crop of 2.5 billion bushels.

Spring wheat is seen at 548.260 million bushels, with an average yield of 41.5 bushels per acre and harvested area of 13.205 million acres. Ahead of the numbers, analysts were projecting production at 490 million to 543 million bushels. By class, hard red spring came out at 510.946 million bushels and white winter was pegged at 37.314 million bushels. 2008’s spring wheat crop totaled 546.744 million bushels with an average yield of 40.5 bushels per acre and harvested area of 13.487 million acres.

Durum wheat production came out at 97.986 million bushels with an average yield of 39.9 bushels per acre and harvested area at 2.453 million acres. Analysts had pegged durum at 85 million bushels and the 2008 crop totaled 84.877 million bushels with an average yield of 32.8 bushels per acre and harvested area of 2.584 million acres.
