Cash cheese barrels held steady for the second day in a row and blocks slipped a penny-and-a-half on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange on Tuesday. That scared Class III futurers traders prompting 31 to 58-cent drops from September 2009 through September 2010.
Part of the problem was the June cheese production report. Total cheese production in the United States in June was 833 million pounds, 2% more than made in June of last year. The National Ag Statistics Service Dairy Products Report shows Italian-type cheese production was up 2% to 343 million pounds, American output increased 4.8% to 353 million pounds for the month.
Wisconsin total cheese production in June was 216.6 million pounds, a 3.8% increase compared to June of last year. Italian cheese production in the Badger State increased 8.5% in June to 103.3 million pounds, American-type cheese production increased 1.4% to 70.4 million pounds and Cheddar output increased 1.2% to 54.4 million pounds.
California total cheese production continues to decline, down 4.1% in June to 165.38 million pounds. American-type cheese production in the Golden State was up 4.5% to 55.2 million pounds, Cheddar increased 7.9% to 33.58 million but Italian cheese production dropped 5.1% to 95.35 million pounds.
Rounding out the top five cheese-producing states: Idaho, 66.5 million pounds, up 1.3% from a year ago. New York, 57.58 million pounds, up 5.8% from last June and Minnesota, 53.77 million pounds up 2.9%.
Illinois cheese production was up 6.6% to 6.2 million pounds, Iowa increased 42.7% to 19.1 million pounds. South Dakota production was up 11.3% to 19.74 million pounds. One other note of interest, Vermont’s cheese production in June was 9.7 million pounds, down 11% compared to June of last year and down 25% from May.
Butter production in the U.S. in June was 7.5% higher than a year ago at 125 million pounds
