Managing for Profit

Raising bison in central Illinois

Terry Lieb and his two sons farm 3,400 acres of corn and soybean near Monticello, Illinois.  Along with the row crops, Terry also keeps a herd of bison on the family farm.  Terry tells Brownfield’s Ken Anderson that what started as a whim has turned into a fairly profitable enterprise-one that he hopes to grow in the future.

  • Love seeing buffalo in Illinois. I volunteer with the Starved Rock Foundation at Starved Rock State Park and have been attempting to push the idea of reintroducing buffalo to the park. The park has about 125-150 restored prairie acres that would allow for a small herd of wild bison. I am curious about the amount of acreage required to support a dozen bison. I have written the governor in the hopes of initiating the dialogue. Any info you could send me would be great. Thanks alot.
