Calling it “game changing technology,” Jerome Peribere, president and CEO of Dow AgroSciences talked with reporters on Tuesday, Jluy 21 about EPA and the Canadian Feed Inspection Agency granting registration of SmartStax, the all-in-one corn trait platform developed by Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences.
“The decision by the EPA and the CFIA also includes a reduction of a typical structured farm refuse in the U.S. Corn Belt from 20 percent to 5 percent, and in the Cotton Belt from 50 percent to 20 percent for both, above and below ground pests,” said Peribere.
Peribere says both Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences are now working with regulatory agencies in key export countries to have import approvals in place before the 2010 planting season.
Phillip Miller, VP of Product Management at Monsanto agrees, adding that the technology also changes things on the farm, beginning with the 5 to 10 percent yield gain.
“That’s a significant amount of profitability and revenue that that grower has not been able to extract off that acre previously,” Miller said.
The new corn seed technology is expected to be offered to farmers on 3 to 4 million plus acres in its first year of availability.
