Illinois bull test open to any breed

The Western Illinois University Bull Test Program is taking entries. Program co-directors Ken Nimrick and Bruce Engnell say entries for the 112-day test – the 38th annual – are open to any breed. The bulls have to be weaned and they have to be started on a preconditioning program by August 22. The entry deadline is August 31st, according to a news release issued by Western Illinois University.

Engnell says the WIU Bull Test offers breeders the chance to compare their bulls against others managed in the same environment. It involves collecting data on a bull’s feed efficiency, which he says is always important, but is even more so considering ongoing high feed prices.

Nimrick says the test also provides data on other essential physical attributes of the animals. At the conclusion of the test in March, they’re going to sell the top bulls in the test.

More information on the bull test is available at the WIU School of Agriculture in Macomb, Illinois.
