Behind the Scenes

It’s hard to imagine

Late last week I had the opportunity to do some reporting on the costs of Hurricane Katrina from a farmer’s perspective. We’ve seen a lot of media coverage focusing on the suffering inside the city limits. But outside of New Orleans there were agricultural producers hit very hard, too. In my story on Friday, leaders of the Louisiana Farm Bureau commented that more than 10 thousand head of cattle are missing and presumed dead. One of the most frightening aspects for farmers and health officials is that those carcasses will soon start surfacing. I cannot imagine the tough road ahead for southern Louisiana’s livestock producers, as they have to bury their losses and begin rebuilding their herds of beef and dairy cattle. It’s hard to imagine that much loss, and no way to stop it. They had about 48 hours notice that a horrific storm was coming right for them, and that’s not nearly enough time to evacuate all the family, and then go back for thousands of head of cattle.
